The White Deer James Thurber; Illustrator-James Thurber; Illustrator-Don Freeman Harcourt Brace 2045 Hardcover Near Fine Very Good Hardcover Signed by Illustrator An unusual find! An early inscription and signature by DON FREEMAN in James Thurber's The White Deer published in 1945 by Harcourt Brace & Co. In addition to Thurber's black and white illustrations, there are four pages and a dust wrapper in full color by Freeman. According to the excellent website of Mr. Freeman's life and career that is maintained by his son, Freeman "captured the spirit and essence of everyday life in New York City, and occasionally Hollywood, during the 1930s and ’40s". He also illustrated for many authors during this period including William Saroyan and Brooks Atkinson. This precedes his work as a children's author and illustrator. Mr. Freeman has inscribed the book to Ethel Swantee(sic) and Phil Fenne (?) and signed 'from your friend and admirer'. It is dated Dec. 1945 and includes Mr. Freeman's distinctive sloping F. He has outlined his inscription with light blue watercolor. I believe Ms. Swantees was an artist in New York City at this time. Edition is not stated but the copyright includes [c.10.45]The book is Near Fine in a Very Good+ dustjacket. The jacket is price clipped. It is not ex-library. The interior pages are clean and unmarked. The boards are clean and unmarked as well with a hint of rubbing to the corners. Jacket is lightly scuffed with light edge wear at the spine ends. There is a tiny closed tear at the top of the front cover, center. Binding is tight and secure. We are pleased to offer this wonderful signed book of Mr. Freeman's.
